Australia will begin administering the COVID-19 vaccine to children aged 5 to 11 from January 10. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Friday, the final regulatory hurdles would be cleared after the rollout. Morrison said in a statement, “This will be welcome news for the millions of families across the country who want the opportunity to have their children vaccinated.”
After reviewing clinical data from Canada, the country’s advisory group recommends an eight-week gap between the two doses, which can be shortened to three weeks if an outbreak occurs.
Pfizer’s dosage will be given at an initial stage while regulators access the suitability of Moderna’s shots. In such a situation, a decision is expected in the coming weeks regarding this.
The decision comes as Australia seeks to accelerate the rollout of booster shots after becoming one of the most vaccinated countries in the world against COVID-19, vaccinating nearly 90% of its population with two doses of up to 16 has been applied. About 70% of children aged 12 to 15 years have been fully vaccinated.
