I’m sure many of you love planes and travel with them often, already today it’s the easiest way to get anywhere, so it’s a fairly popular and safe option in recent years.
But two fatal plane crashes in 2018 and 2019 made the safety facts in minds dubious. The plane involved in both accidents was Boeing 737 Max model aircraft, the first accident killed 189 people on October 29, 2018, while the second accident killed 157 people on March 10, 2019.
So what was the reason for these accidents, pilot error? a technical error on the plane? or weather conditions?
My friends, first of all, the Boeing 737 Max was a brand new aircraft, and it was never acceptable for such a new model to be involved in two fatal accidents in a row in modern aviation.
Boeing was an American-based company founded in 1916, it gained its place in the sector with various models it produced during the war years and then started to produce passenger jets dating back to the present day.
For years, he was able to dominate the passenger aircraft sector alone, but there was an aircraft manufacturer like Airbus that grew firmly and surpassed Boeing with the number of orders. And that scared Boeing executives.
Boeing, formerly a company focused on high quality and safety, now wanted to produce aircraft as much and cheaper as possible with the ambition to win. They used ways such as layoffs, salary cuts, punishment of employees who found fault in production.
The critical point in the heating of things started when Airbus’ low-capacity and high fuel efficiency model, called the A320 Neo, took control of the aircraft market sector. Boeing did not have such a study, but they had no intention of leaving the entire market share to Airbus.
Therefore, they added engines that offer high fuel efficiency with small arrangements on the already existing 737 model and put them up for sale. However, due to the fact that the design of the aircraft was not up to date, the engines were placed at a more extreme point than they normally should have been, which could cause the plane to raise its nose up while driving.
To prevent this, Boeing used a software called MCAS (System for Developing Maneuver Characteristics) in the 737 Max model. This software basically allowed the nose to be turned down automatically if the plane’s nose was overlifted.
But he never told airlines and pilots about this software he installed on Boeing planes, because they wanted to launch their planes as soon as possible, and if they talked about using a new system for their aircraft, the pilots would have to be given additionalsimulation training.
Boeing’s wealth-loving bosses were playing a dangerous gambling that would exchange human life for money.
And unfortunately, it was feared, friends, on October 29, 2018, Lion Air Airlines’ 737 Max plane crashed shortly after taking off, Boeing and various media outlets started to serve news that this was due to pilot error, but on March 10, 2019, the Ethiopian Airlines’ 737 Max aircraft was turned into Boeing shortly after takeoff.
As a result of the investigations, it was revealed that there were tragic moments in the cockpit in two accidents. What happened was like this:
Shortly after the plane took off the runway, the MCAS system turned the plane’s nose down, detecting it as if the plane’s nose was going up and turned the plane down, and the pilots intervened it further down.
Unaware of the existence of this system on the plane, the pilots could not control the plane no matter what they did. That’s what happened in both accidents.Airlines and pilots were not informed of the existence of such a deadly and powerful system, and accidents were experienced in plain sight.
Boeing was forced to pay $2.5 Billion in damages as a result of lawsuits, and 737 Max aircraft could not fly for 20 months, resumed flying with software updates and various approvals.
